PARK BOARD MEETING May 3, 1972 The meeting was called to order at 8:10 p.m. Board members present: Cook, Dahl., Gunderman, Hagemeyer, Sherlock and Smith. Weissman appeared at 8:25 p.m. Absent: Council Representative Rebelein. Others present: Robert M. Wicklund, Parks and Recreation Director.. The minutes of the regular meeting of April 5, 1.972 were approved with the following corre~ti:on: page 3, paragraph 6. Should read . February 2, 1.972 with the exception that the parking lots be relocated closer to the road. Agenda additions: M.R.P.A. Commission Session Seminar.. PLAYGROUND APPARATUS Mr. Timothy Glaros, a physical education teacher at Highview Jr. High School, presented a request for the installation of gymnastic equipment in all neighborhood parks and Long Lake beach. Mr. Glaros submitted specifications for four items involved in the request: 7_. Low balance beam 2. Parallel bars 3. Horizontal bar ~-. Still rings Mr, Glaros stated that there was a growing interest in the area of gymnastics and that it was a good activity for physical develop- ment and was of equal interest to both. boys and girls. He further stated that New Brighton parks were oriented to team sports, whereas gymnastics was an individual sport. Gunderman asked if it would be possible for these pieces of equip- ment to be constructed and installed by some of the participants interested in the activity. Mr. Glaros stated that construction would be too time-consuming, although assistance with installation was possible. Tt was pointed out that two areas, Sunny Square and Totem Pole, were developed to the maximum and it was unlikely that there was enough room for an additional activity area. Further, the depart- ment budget has been approved from sometime and there is no pro- vision for this equipment.
