• •
Park Board Meeting
Page 2
Summer Recreation Program
Charles Corlett, Summer Playground Supervisor-Coordinator, appeared
to review summer recreation program for the Park Board. He stated
that several changes were being made from past year's programs. The
playground program will be operating on an afternoon and evening
basis with the emphasis on younger children in the afternoon and
.teen-age64in the evening. An attempt wi11 be made to rnove the center
of the program off the park and into the community. Trips and tours
to unique attractions in the metropolitan area will be emphasized.
The entire summer recreation. program is being greatly expanded as
the department is attempting to step-up the intensity of its
recreational offerings.
Long Range Plan Status
The Board was informed that certain priorities have been agreed
upon with the Long Range Plan. The acquisition of two additional
park sites was first priority and their development to a useable
state was second priority. Third and fouxth priorities were the
development of the Long Lake site and second phase development of
Hansen Park. However, at this point the planning process was in a
holding position pending the outcome of conversations with Ramsey
County Board concerning the Long Lake site. The Board requested a
review of said conversations up to this point. They were informed
that there has been one meeting held in which very general alternative
methods of cooperation were discussed. Tt was evident from the
information received that the County is very interested in having
access to the Long Lake site, as it was a central node in the Rice
Creek Recreation Corridor.
Dahl asked if it were not possible to give the County access to the
northern end of the site while still maintaining complete local
control.
Sherlock expressed a concern that should the County become involved
that the entire site would be completely overrun.
Hagemeyer asked if it were not possible in some way restrict
attendance on the site.
Cook stated that the permit system used at the beach seems to be
effective in discouraging heavy nonresident use.
Tt was pointed out that the system used at the beach in no way
guaranteed any priority to residents that it was first come, first
serve as to available space, and that many people beat the system
by leaving their vehicles outside the beach area and walking in,
