~ r Gunderman questioned the need for play equipment when Bel-Air School was so close. It was stated that the Bel-Air equipment was. designed for older children as well as being considered somewhat unattractive. An attempt will be made to coordinate the equipment of the two facilities. Gunderman asked if the hockey rink originally recommended for the far north end of the park was still being considered. It was noted that there was no provision for a shelter building or lighting of the rink and that without these support facilities a hockey rink would not serve much of a purpose. Th'e question of lack of free skating space was discussed. It was suggested that the possibility of bypassing the pond during the winter months be explored. This would isolate the area and eliminate the problem of moving water preventing freeze up. The Board was then presented a proposal for development of the Long Lake site. The proposal included-a road coming from the south along the eastern edge of the park and dead ending approximatley 3/4's of the way up. Other features included conversion of the existing beach into a non-power craft boat laLnching area, a fishing area on the first point, a beach on the second point, two play areas, afield game area, tennis courts, picnic area, archery range and nature trail area. The emphasis of the proposal was on family oriented, adult-oriented and nature oriented activities. The play areas, tennis courts and field game areas were designed to serve as support areas for the picnic grounds. Gunderman recommended that the parking areas be placed as close to the road as possible so as to keep vehicular traffic outside the center of the park. Cook asked if it were necessary to convert the entire existing beach into a boat launch. He felt that as the swimming area was already developed it would be wasteful not to use it for its intended purpose. However, beaches are facilities requiring intensive supervision and dispersion of swimming areas would create supervision problems. The Board discussed the road leading into the park. Bahl asked if consideration was given to connecting the proposed road to Mississippi Street on the north when it was crmpleted. She stated she was opposed to a through road in the perk. The Board generally concurred that they would wish to avoid haying a through road in the park. ~r~inter use oz the site was a?.so considered. It was recommended that a building be constructed which would serve as beach house and concession stand in the summer and a ~Jarming house in the winter. The beach area could then be used for skating, Other winter activities would include sledding, possibly a ski tow, and snowmobiling. ~~herlock questioned the desirability cf allowing snowmobiles in the park at all. It was pointed out that with the heavy snowmobile traffic on the lake it would be ..inevitable that a number of the machines would spill on to the park. It was felt that it would be better to attempt
