Park Board Minutes
~~ June 3, 1970
3
Maintenance Activities
The maintenance crew has been woxking on the grounds but the recent
rain has been a hindrance. The panels on the Foss Road shelter have
been removed. A discussion ensued on the possibility of removing
the panels at the other buildings. Mr. Gunderman questioned the
advisability of doing so at Sunnyside due to the high vandalism.
Mr. Smith suggested that the .children themselves be appointed to
watch the area. This might be particularly suited for a group such
as the Boy Scouts.
Recognition of Volunteers
Boy Scout Troops 412, 418, 93, 299 and Post 106 have helped in tree
planting at Rice Creek, Sunnyside and Pike Lake. They also planted
the flowers on the traffic islands at 5th Avenue and Old Highway 8.
Mr. Gunderman questioned whether the Park and Recreation Department
should be involved in work on County land. Mr. Hagemeyer, requested
that the Director send a letter of appreciation to the Sc¢~~ts on
behalf of the Park Board.
Mrs. Dahl stated that the Scouts would also maintain the area on a
weekly basis.
Park Program Expenditures and Revenues
The report on the current status of park funds was distributed. It
will be studied and discussed at a future meeting.
Long Lake Acquisition
Mr. Gunderman recommended that a report on the progress of the Long
Lake acquisition proceedings be included on the agenda for the
special meeting of June 10.
Park Naming Contest
Mrs_ Dahl reported that community groups were contacted with respect
to the contest. The League of Women Voters indicated a willingness
to participate either through serving on a committee or by providing
a judge for the contest. The Jaycees were interested in the contest
but at some future date. The Business and Professional Women are
willing to assume responsibility for the contest with children
submitting suggested names to a panel of judges. They would promote
the contest and solicit prizes. It was recommended that the BPW
proposal be accepted with the League of Women Voters and the Jaycees
represented on the judges.
Mr. Weissman suggested that the contest be postponed until fall
unless the BPW wished to act immediately.
