• An attractive publicity follow-up to the gifts catalog would be the pro-
duction of a film (donated?) for airing on local television stations, with
the a "What's Happening With the Gifts Catalog" theme.. It might feature tent-
age. irr~ony from contributors who are pleased with their gifts to the community.
out
A
t As holidays approach, heavier than normal promotion of the catalog can
ements yield good returns. Certainly the Christmas season is an ideal time for
the people to be reminded that the gifts catalog is filled with gifts that
n_ would add a new dimension to their holiday giving. Many people would be
reser- happier to have a gift given to the community in their name than to receive
to a bottle of perfume or a new set of cufflinks. Other gift-giving holidays
ing like Mother's or Father's Days are perfect for promoting the gifts cataloa.
and In San Francisco, the children of Daniel Koshland gave an entire. park to
.,. the City as a gift for their father. It°s an ideal alternative gift "for
the roan (or woman) who has everything:"
Although seldom considered a holiday, the end of the tax year is another
!" good time to intensify publicity. People are better aware near tax time
of whether they can take advantage of an income tax deduction fora char-
. itable contribution.
;_
ng
es
eo-
thy
erly
our
ed
~ ~
It is important to give at least as much
recognition for various gifts as the cata-
log states or implies. P?ost importantly,
the giver should be shown genuine appre-
ciation in a personal way, by phone call or
letter inrrnediately on receipt of .the gift.
Later, public recognition can be arranged
for publicity purposes as well as wider
acknowledgement, but the giver should not
have to await a ceremony before he or she
is thanked. It should also be noted that
Borne givers may wish to remain anonymous
or prefer not to be acknowledged in the
news media. These feelings should be re-
spected, and no ceremony arranged without
the consent of the giver.
~~
6.
