LeAnn Linder
Lifestyle ~iealth Director
New .Brighton and Mounds View Park and Recreation
633-.8906 784-3055
LIFESTYLE HEALTH PROGRAM
Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is as important as getting help when
you are sick. Your lifestyle is you., .what you think, feel, do, eat,
drink. and breathe.. The goal of the New Brighton. and Mounds View
Lifestyle Health and Fitness Prtigram is to provide information and
motivation to encourage individuals to make meaningful lifestyle
changes that will improve their state of health and well-being..
Today almost 70 percent of all deaths in Minnesota are caused by .
heart disease, stroke and cancer,. reports the Minnesota Health
Department, 1983. The "good news" is we can now identify personal
risk factors related to the causes of death as stemming from poor
lifestyle habits. We encourage individuals to-take personal re-
sponsibility for their health and to make behavioral changes that
reduce. the risk of illness and injury.
Studies indicate strong benefits of lifestyle programs and indvid-
uals report feeling better physically, mentally, as well as an en-
hanced capacity for work. Participants are more able to relax, be-
come ill less and report improved self-esteem and family relation-
ships.. Most of all, people believe .these activities to be fun.
An objective of the program is to increase awareness and provide
education that will support lifetime fitness activities for all
ages. We encourage a balanced lifestyle, offering a"wide variety
of activities with sustained positive change as a goal. Four phases
are generally included in the wellness concept.
1. Personal health assessment (computerized printout of
past medical history and current lifestyle practices)
2. Educational classes
3. Fitness and activities
4. Goal setting, motivation, maintenance
The Mounds View and New Brighton Lifestyle Health and Fitness program
encompasses. these five areas: i
*Fitness and Activities
*Nutrition and Weight Control
*Stress Panagement
*Personal Skills/Healthy Relationships
Smoking/Alcohol and Drugs
A complete brochure of class offerings will be available in December.,
Programs begin January, 1984 and will offer such classes as:
*Fitness for Families *Stress Management
*Aerobic Dance *Time ranagement
*Aqua Exercise for Srs. *Healthy Eating Habits
*Swim and Stay Fit *Successful Weight Control
*Stop Smoking *Lifetime Sports for the Handicapped
