December 7, 1983-Park Board Minutes
Page 2
Anderson said he lake will be used for snowmobiling but it
will not be .allowed in the parka
Gunderman asked .what the .implications would be if snowmobiling
were denied totally.
Carlson responded that you would be denying recreation to some.
Snamoblers are not usually aut of hand, rarely are these many,
problems with them.
John Kelley agreed that snowmobilers are not. usually`a major
problem.
Van Hatten stated he is not a snowmobiles but does not fee
the privilege should be denied if it's not being abused. Would
like to see a trail maintained along the edge of the lake.
Solberg agreed with Van Hatten, can't see a problem with the
snowmobilers.
Dahl had no comments except inquiring what is meant by the
park being closed, what are the implications.
John Kelley felt it would be a horrendous. problem to patrol
the park if it were closed.
Ken Simons said that cross country skiing would be allowed
because there is no signing that states skiers should not
be in the park. Snowmobiling ordinance will probably be
enforced but not cross country skiing. At the present time..
it is not crucial that snowmobilers not use the park but when
the park is complete there will not be any place for them to
.drive except on the roadways-or paved paths which are not
allowed. It's better to educate them now.
John Kelley stated he would like something in writing from
Ramsey County regarding cross country skiing, snowmobiling
and whether the park will be open or closed.
Carlson stated that at the present time anyone found in the:
park is tagged. If there is a change, Ramsey County should
send a letter to Jerry Bergeroun letting him know.
Carlson added that if snowmobiling were eliminated from the
lake it would encourage them into the park because they have
no where else to go. If there were a trail in the park, it
would have to be groomed and-well marked and this would be
very hard- to maintain. There has been talk for years of a
snowmobile trail to Duluth. If that ever came into being, it
would be nice to have a corridor. through the park to Hwy. 96.
If snowmobiles were eliminated completely, there would be a
real public relations problem.
Hogan stated that he is an ex-snowmbiler and has seen. the
damage they can do. Feels there should be no snowmobiling
in the park, only on the lake surface.
