March 30, 1984
To: New Brighton Park Board
From: Aaurice H. Anderson, Director of Parks and Recreation
Re: Request to Purchase Hansen Park Land
As can be seen from the attached memo, Gordon Hedlund is requesting
the pruchase of a 30 foot strip of Hansen Park land. Mr, Hedlund
has expressed to me his opinion that the land is currently unused
and is not vital to the use of or future development of the north
portion of Hansen Park
It could be said of much .of our park land that it is not actively
used and therefore unnecessary as well as the fact that adjoining
property owners could put it to good use. We have had informal re-
quests for a similar action at Hidden Oaks Park and others may
materialize in the future.
I agree that we could do Mr. Hedlund a favor in this instance by
recommending the sale of the property. I feed:, however, that we
have a greater obligation to the residents of the City in general
to preserve as much park and open space as possible. I have had
some personal and professional misgivings about using park areas
for, wells and water treatment plants. There has .been in these
instances clear benefit to the community through lowered costs for
water.
I see no clear or obvious benefit to the City or its residents by
granting this request and am therefore recommending that it be
denied.
