February 6, 1;985 Park Board Minutes
Page 6
Long 'Lake Park site. This would be an assetto, the park and
it would be a better location than the current one. .Have
talked to Ramsey County, and the Long Lake Advisory Board
endorsed it. This means a change to the .master. plan. w©u1d
like to get it done soon. The museum was built in 1.887. Would,
love to have its 100 year anniversary grand opening. That would be
great. We have the backing from the Minn. Historical Society
(for ',grants) The building has never been modified.. Tn 1915
electirc lights were put in and oil heat. Still has an outhouse,'
no running water. The Mills. & St. Croix R. R. built it, it was
not the Soo Line. It will have to have toilets and equipped
for the handicapped.. It will be accessible to alot of people and
we will get to tell the stockyard story. It may be ..the oldest
building in New Brighton.. It was built before the stockyards,.
When ',the railroad built. their lines, they needed someone to
operate the lights so they built the building with full living
quarters. It has a waiting room, kitchen, two bedrooms and
living .room.
Van Hatter asked if moving it will be a problem.
Bromander said because of the move it will not be able to be
listed in the National Reigster. Once moved, it is normally
not accepted in the register. The Soo Line would have destroyed
the building if we didn't take it.
Van Hatter asked how far it was to the proposed site.
Bromander said about l mile.
Bromander said three. sites were suggested by Ramsey County. The
Historical Society agreed to .the middle site. .South of where
the road crosses the R. R. tracks. It would be more accessible
than ',the other 2 sites... Tt could also be a starting point for
any guided tour.
Anderson said the county did a complete turnaround on this issue,
Bromander said they did. He was originally told the County, would
never approve it.
Van Hatter asked if the basement was for facilities.
Bromander said yes. The toilets would be located in the basement,
The building did not have a foundation. It was sitting on wood
and had gotten quite crooked.
Berke said there is clot of work to be done to restore the
building.
Bromander said not really. The
needs additional floor joists.
building inspector said it
