May 7, 1986 Park Board Minutes <br />Page 2 <br />Carlson said the number of kids coming into the beach may be <br />reduced because there is no convenient way to get there. <br />Johnson said the PCA is investigating groundwater contamination. <br />Nelson said the summer newsletter would be out to the residents <br />soon and there is a section in there about Long Lake. We <br />did. hire an aquatics supervisor, Pete Rechtzigel. He is very. <br />qualified; he's from South St. Paul. <br />Johnson said everyone should have gotten a copy of the food.. <br />service report re: Long Lake. No action is necessary. <br />Long Lake beach is scheduls3to open June 7. <br />Rose asked about how the parking would be handled at the launch site. <br />Johnson said there would be collapsible, spring loaded markers. <br />Carlson said in order to keep the regulated number,. the markers <br />would have to extend into the lake. <br />The Long Lake Regional Committee is interested in working with <br />the Park Board on the grand opening, which will probably be <br />coordinated with Stockyard Days. <br />A resident suggested having a canoe race as part of Stockyard Days. <br />V. New Business <br />A. Veterans Park Renovation <br />Johnson asked if there were any other concerns not <br />brought up at the previous meeting with the residents. <br />Nelson said the tot lot area did not get talked about. <br />It gets aloe of use from St. John's and the use would <br />be from 1st - 8th grade. The equipment should be geared <br />toward that age group. <br />Olson said she was concerned about the age group using <br />the equipment too. Tot lot sounds like something <br />for pre-schoolers. Maybe there could be two separate <br />areas; one for the younger group and one-for the older kids. <br />Midness said that "tot lot" is just a term they use. It <br />does not designate a specific age group. <br />Van Hatten also stated it was important that the equipment <br />installed should be able to withstand the older kids. <br />Olson wanted to make sure the ball games would not interfere <br />with the kids playing in the tot lot area. <br />Midness said the tot lot is 260' away - it shouldn't be a <br />problem. There are trees that will buffer-the area too. <br />
