May 7, 1986 Park Board Minutes Page 3
~_ -,
;: ~'
Carlson also felt the play area should be divided into
"" - two areas; one for 4-6 graders and one for 1-3 graders.
The two groups play differently.
Van Hatten said that was a good idea.
Van Hatten felt there might be a need for a bigger bleacher
area.
Johnson said it was interesting to note from the Veterans
Park neighborhood that there is so much interest in
watching the ball games.
Rose asked if the senior high rise is just a proposal at
•this time. Yes, was the response.
Carlson thought there could be a ramp built along one
side of the bleachers that would enable wheelchairs
and handicapped people to watch games.
Johnson said the first row could be left open for them.
Johnson said in Plan #4 he would like to see the walkway
continued to the sidewalk along the back of the ball diamond -
just for another access.
Van Hatten said there is an entrance by the parking lot.
Johnson said-yes, but it wouldn't take much to put in
another one.
Nelson said the gazebo area could be used for muscians on
weekday afternoons or weekends.
Johnson said in Plan #4 could have something like the concert
grove with a raised area so people can see better.
Olson said you could do .just the opposite by using the contour
and have people above looking down.
Johnson said the residents agreed that the ball field should
stay in the plan.
Van Hatten said the Park Board should consider the wish of
the residents regarding 3rd Ave.
Johnson said there are other alternatives. Recommend having
a door to door poll on how people feel about closing 3rd Ave.
Seward said he had approached St. John's about 2 months ago
regarding the possibility of them donating some money for
play equipment. At that time Sister Gwendolin was in favor
of closing 3rd Ave.
Resident,Jerry Bensing, said he believes that opinion has
changed.
Olson asked how much traffic 3rd Ave. ,gets.
