May 7, 1986 Park Board Minutes
Page 4
Van Hatten said he has lived in the area about 20 years and
said he uses 3rd Ave. about twice a month on the average but
does not recall meeting or seeing another car while on it.
Olson said sometimes people are more concerned with the change
just because it is a change rather than any logical reason.
Rose .asked if 3rd .Ave. remained, where would the bleachers
go.
They would have to all be on one side.
Johnson felt taking a poll ,would be the best way to handle this.
Nelson wondered how long it takes people to get out of-the parking
lot at St. John's
Van Hatten said no matter what was done there wouldn't be any
less accesses.
Seward said the park is so small - it-needs to be expanded.
Van Hatten was surprised that the residents were not concerned
about the money it would cost to upgrade .3rd Ave. if it remained
open.
Nelson thought perhaps half of the street could be taken for
park, ar~.d half for turn around area for St. John's parking.
Van Hatten said if any part of the street was taken out, it
would eliminate all of the street parking.
Johnson asked if there was a motion.
A resident from the audience commented that he has lived in
the area for 40 years and has never seen too much traffic on
3rd Ave. He feels in the winter it is rather hazardous because
at the intersection you cannot see the cross traffic coming.
Would not object to the closing of 3rd Ave. It would be more
beneficial to the park. He walks in the area about two times
a day. He sees alot of people walking in that area and feels
the walkways would be used alot.
Van Hatten's concern about taking a poll was how to do it
without alot of explanation. Would really have to be careful
about how you asked the question.
Williams stated there was a public hearing on the street re-
surfacing. There was some agreement to close 3rd Ave. After
that __a :petition against--the c,l~sing of 3r.d_AVe. came about.
Johnson said that if the ball diamond was expanded there would
be more use and more games to watch.
Van Hatten asked if the ball/diamond could be moved closer
to the street to make it bigger.
