April 2, 1986 Park Board Minutes
Page 2
Anderson said that it is nice to have people from different
locations because you get different views and comments. One
area of the city might be more blue collar; another area
might be white collar. It might be appropriate to suggest
different policies for each of the boards and commissions.
Perhaps geographical location is important to some boards
and commission but not to others. The Council may want to
look at this. issue more closely in the next 9 months.
B. Long Lake Advisory Committee
Johnson said there was a big turnout. There were some
Sportsman Club people present expressing concern about
being able to continue the ice fishing contest. An overall
update on the park was given. The boundary fence will have
cedar outside and brown or green chain link inside; it sounds
real nice. Boat launch discussion surfaced and dominated the
meeting. Plans for the depot were given.
The comments made in the Minneapolis-paper about the tar pits
did not generate much discussion. Ken Simons thought it was
blown out of proportion. Anderson said they may find alot
of contamination, possibly worth one million dollars in clean
up. Bury, and Ashland may also be responsible. The City is
is not responsible for the cleanup and will try to stay out of
this matter. The City never owned the contaminated property.
Williams asked if this would affect use of the park this summer.
Anderson said the PCA wants the area marked off so people will
not wander into it. Anderson feels it shouldn't have to be
fenced.~since the area is swamp.
V. New Business
A. Veterans Park Renovation
Bill Midness from Damon Farber and Associates was present
to give a presentation on landscape ideas for the park.
Three alternatives were drawn up. Each took into consideration
the following items:
-Upgrade ball field
-Include shelter building
-Senior citizen area
-Storm water retention
-Tot lot area
-Fencing
Van Hatten stated access to the park for St. John's school
children was important.
Midness stated that it was alluded to in the plans by the
closing of 3rd Ave.
