MEMO
March 30, 1994
To: New Brighton Park Board
From: Maurice H. Andei,~~tor of Pazks and Recreation
Re: April Agenda Items
Pike Lake School Request -Enclosed in your packet is a request from the Pike Lake School
for assistance in upgrading the playground at Pike Lake School. The playground at Pike
Lake serves both the school and park- patrons, the School District and the City jointly
purchased the existing equipment light yeazs ago.
The request is for $15,000. The 1994 Capital Improvement budget contains a $10,000
appropriation for accessibility improvements, most of which was targeted far Pike Lake
School equipment. Since the new equipment will be fully accessible, the City money could
certainly be used for new equipment. The City does not have an identifiable source for the
additional $5,000 requested. Staff recommends a $10,000 contribution.
Rice Creek Trail -The Pazk Board and City Council studied this issue in the spring of 1979
and finally approved a rail comdor route from Stinson Blvd. to Long Lake Pazk.
Construction is scheduled for this summer and some adjoining residents have become
increasingly upset as the construction season approaches. The Council has directed the Pazk
Board to review the 1979 decision (see attachments) and provide the Council with a
recommendation for it's April 12th meeting.
Staff recommendation is reiterate support for the railroad right of way option and request that
Ramsey County design to accepted standards and work with affected residents to reduce
potential negative impacts of the trail.
Family Service Center - The Park Board is being requested to create asub-committee to
study Family Service Center programming fees and/charges and management options. This
committee would consist of interested Pazk Boazd members and 5-8 interested citizens, (five
have requested appointments so far) and City staff representatives. The committee would
make its recommendation to the Pazk Board no later than July 6th.
