May 5, 1993 Park Board Minutes
2
Metro Parks and Open Space vote Monday, then it goes to
Metropolitan Council. In 30 days Mounds View and Spring Lake .Park
Councils will be considering resolutions to proceed with the project.
V. New Business
A. Work Session on Potential Family Center
Anderson has talked about looking at the development of a family
center with a number of organizations; Community Ed. School District,
Northwest Youth & Family Services -would lease, Head Start
declined, Tom Copeland, Physical Therapist is very interested, Ramsey
County Public Health is interested. Three commissioners on the
County Board are supportive. The YMCA and St. Anthony School
District are interested in a Latch Key program. It seems to be coming
together.
Anderson said Williams, O'Brien has been hired fior the initial stage of
the Family Center. Anderson and Jim O'Brien toured the Anoka
County facility in Blaine. It is a 3 story building with 65,000 square
feet. First floor is used for handicapped, second floor county job
training, third floor has about 20 United Way offices. The model is
very similar to what New Brighton wants. The county built it with and
E.D.A. Everyone there liked the idea of bringing different agencies
under one roof. Only one contract is needed for cleaning, repairs, etc.
They are now looking at construction of a 4th floor. We can look at
any of their contract agreements. It is very similar especially in
principle.
Kinzie asked when the Park Board would have a chance to tour that
facility.
Anderson said anyone interested can tour the facility.
Anderson stated the opportunity for a family center will not come
again. A lot of is coming together.
Council Rep. Williams inquired if there is a committee of potential
users that can give their input on the design plan.
Anderson said yes. A group has been identified. The Park Board and
Council can also take part if they are interested.
Anderson said the group will meet every Monday at 7:30am at
Northwest Youth and Family Services offices.
Olson, Kinzie and Eichers expressed interest although they did not
know if they could make the first meeting.
