June 3, 1992 Park Board Minutes <br />B. Mufti City Sr. Center Task Force <br />Anderson said the Task Force met two weeks ago and approved <br />$10,000 for design work. Primary site is Anoka County. Backup is <br />the Rice Creek Center. Looking at costs for both facilities. Screening <br />of architectural firms will be next week. Work will be started in late <br />June. Schematics should be back mid-August. The Anoka County <br />Board favors donating the Anoka Co. Site but no formal decision has <br />been made yet. <br />Anderson introduced Dave Childs, City Manager <br />V. New Business <br />A. Discussion/Overview of Golf Programs -Mary Burg <br />2 <br />Anderson first gave some background information about the golf <br />course. The City purchased the golf course from Vince Dahle in 1977. <br />The City was able to borrow money at 5% interest on a 20 year loan. <br />Anderson asked the Finance Dept. to prepare and analysis of profit, <br />loss from the time the city purchased it through the year 2000. <br />Anderson went through the report with the Park Board. (See <br />attached.) <br />Mary Burg, Golf Course Superintendent, relayed information about her <br />background and the golf course operation. Burg. grew up in New <br />Brighton went to Anoka Tech for ground maintenance. Worked three <br />summers for the Forestry Dept., was then hired as a full time <br />maintenance employee. Applied and received the golf course <br />superintendent position about 8 years ago. <br />Minnesota has the highest per capita of golf courses in the Country. <br />Brightwood Hills puts through about 38,000-39,000 rounds of golf a <br />year. We are practically coaxed out. Sell about 400 season passes a <br />year. When we first started offering lessons we had about 60 adults, <br />this year we have already put through 108. All of our golf instructors <br />have about 15 years of golf experience. Charge S28 for 5 lessons. <br />Groups are small, 12-13 per class. Other courses have classes of <br />about 40. <br />Anderson stated that the golf course is a recreation facility first and a <br />money maker second. We keep lessons and rates as low as we can. <br />Benke asked if a survey has been taken of the area people come to <br />play here. <br />Burg said no but she knows some come from as far as Burnsville. <br />
