June 3, 1992 Park Board Minutes
Anderson went through each CIP item.
Discussion of the CIP was delayed until after the Little Lakes Little
League agenda item.
B. Little Lakes Little League
Len Pratt stated he was second year President of Little Lakes Little
League. He introduced Ken Cooper; previous president and Jack
Pederson, board member and in charge of try outs.
4
Pratt stated this was LLLL 31st year. Have approximately 1,300 kids
playing this year from New Brighton, Arden. Hills, Shoreview, North
Oaks, Mounds View.
Pratt responded to the anonymous letter written to Little Lakes Little
League expressing concern about the tryouts and how children were
chosen for teams.
It was explained that those who participated in tryouts received 18
evaluations. No names were on participants when they tried out,
numbers were used instead. Rankings were made on everyone but
they were not made public. The overall rankings of children by all
evaluators were very close. Before tryouts parents had the
opportunity to attend a meeting where the try out process was
explained.
Pratt stated the letter indicated that kids who had parents involved
with. LLLL were chosen over other kids. Pratt indicated that his son
did not make the tryouts.
It was noted that all players were placed on teams but not all made
the tryouts. The city the child was from was not a factor in
determining who made tryouts. About 50% of the kids are from
Shoreview and about 10% from New Brighton. Shoreview provides
50% of the fields and New Brighton about 10%. There are other
baseball leagues in the communities. MVAA draws more New
Brighton people. LLLL is able to participate in the National
Tournament; MVAA does not participate in the National Tournament, it
is a more amateur league.
The Park Board thanked the LLLL representatives for coming and
added it was good for the Park Board to hear about the tryout
procedures first hand.
CIP DISCUSSION CONTINUED...
Anderson felt more money may need to be added to the CIP for
Innsbruck in 1993 since a meeting with the residents in that area
would be held soon.
