February 5, 1992 Park Board Minutes
B. Senior Center Task Force
Olson inquired if the resolution for the Senior Center was approved.
Anderson said yes. There is a workshop scheduled for Tuesday, 5:30-
7:OOpm.
2
Helgeson commented that it doesn't make sense to have two buildings; a
senior center and a community center.
Anderson said the senior center will be combined with 3 other
communities; this will keep costs down.
Olson said the Senior Center Task Force meetings usually rotate from
community to community. They meet the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays. The
results of a recent survey showed there is a very high percentage of
interest for a senior center.
Olson said 5 sites are being considered; one at Brightwood Hills with a
new attached clubhouse. Parking shared with Salem Baptist and they
would also use the building for Sunday School classes. Another site is at
the south end of the Rice Creek shopping center, another is by Moore
Lake beyond the beach, another Silver Lake Road & County Road I,
another site is south of Medtronic in the vicinity of the Anoka County
trailhead. There are homes on the Moore Lake site so that is probably
out. Rice Creek and Brightwood Hills are within the 3 mile radius for most
of the people in all the communities.
Knuth asked if the legislation will pass this year.
Benke responded yes, hopefully summer or fall.
Trevorrow asked how the sites were chosen.
Anderson said each community tried to come up with a site that was
available and of adequate size and had other amenities such as a park,
golf course, trails or shopping. Originally had about 10 sites and
narrowed it down to 5. The committee has the option of adding more
sites but they have not added any as of this time.
Kalina asked if parking would be a problem if done at the Brightwood Hills
site.
Anderson said we would shorten the 1st tee and expand the parking lot
to the north. Then a driveway would be run from Brightwood Hills to
Salem Baptist next door. Brightwood would be able to use church
parking and the church use Brightwood's. Salem could also use some of
the space in the Brightwood building on Sundays. There would also be a
walkway between the two buildings.
