February 5, 1992 Park Board Minutes
Trevorrow asked if there is any chance of having the senior center and a
community center combined in the future.
Anderson said when building we hope to keep future expansion in mind.
Knuth asked for a definition of a Senior Center.
3
Olson said meeting rooms, congregate dining, nutrition programs.
Anderson added that nursing, glaucoma testing, chores assistance would
be willing to provide services. Most have been contacted and expressed
willingness to provide their services in such a center. It would help
centralize these services.
Olson said some rooms in the center would be available on off times for
rent, for weddings, etc.
Benke said he can see the support for a combined senior center but he
also knows there is opposition.
Rose said there are some who don't want it but the majority of seniors
don't want to travel to Shoreview for congregate dining.
Knuth sees two great needs; early childhood and senior citizens. Could
we blend the two together?
Anderson said work is being done to get the Headstart program in New
Brighton.
Benke said right now we are looking primarily at seniors.
Knuth said both early childhood and seniors have similar needs and could
share food and medical facilities.
Anderson said New Brighton is only 1 /4 of the equation. Fridley has
shouldered most of the load. Even if the other 3 communities do not
move forward on this, Fridley probably will. They have the most pressure
for a senior center.
Anderson said if we considered a combined early childhood and senior
center it would be a significant shift from where we are now.
Ocel commented that it sounds like many communities want a
community center. Could there be a community center for many
communities?
Olson stated that the communities intersted in the Sr. Center are not the
same communities that are interested in a community center.
Anderson said it has been discussed to keep open to the idea of
expansion in the future; perhaps a swimming pool, or gym.
