February 5, 1992 Pazk Boazd Minutes
Benke said that even though the referendum for a community center
failed, the needs did not go away; they are still there.
V. New Business
A. Election of Officers
See first paragraph.
B. Discussion/Overview of Recreation Programs -Pat Tuma
Pat Tuma handed out a list of program offerings listed by age. The
Department offers a wide range of programs.
4
Tuma discussed how instructors were hired, that she works closely with
the schools, how programs are started, how fees are structured, how and
where advertising is done.. There are two kinds of programs, non-taxable
and tax supported. Scholarships have been made available to New
Brighton residents by the New Brighton Kitchen Kut-Up Kitchen Band.
The newest programs are after school at Highview. The programs just
started this week. The offerings are: aerobics, basketball, swimming.
The programs run from 4:00-5:OOpm. This time is difficult for some
children because they have to depend on a ride. The activity bus leaves
at 4:OOpm. That maybe why the attendance has not been very good but
we are hoping as the weeks go on that it will pick up.
Kalina asked if there was an Advisory group at Highview. They could
help guide the children to these programs.
Tuma said she has worked with them, the student council, intramural
groups and coaches that she knows there.
Trevorrow asked if the parents have been informed of these programs.
Tuma responded that Dr. Young has been cautious about how he
advertised these programs. Mostly it has been done only within the
school through posters and announcements.
Tuma said that after our instructors are hired they have an in-service
meeting. In the summer this is very extensive. We cover CPR and first
aid, a member of the Police Dept talks to them, and customer service is
stressed.
Anderson said we generally get good performance from our staff.
Carlson said the Park and Rec. Dept. does an outstanding job.
Eichers stated he really appreciates the school day off trips.
Anderson said he will invite Kelly Schultz to the next meeting to discuss
the Senior Citizen programs.
