Februazy 5, 1992 Pazk Boazd Minutes
C. Hansen Tennis Courts
5
Anderson said that the developer who did the existing Hansen tennis
courts didn`t account for the 30-40 feet of peat that is under the courts.
They did put in 6 feet of fill but not the proper fill.. A law suit against the
developer was settled in 1976 for $6,000. We have abandoned one of
the 4 courts and cracking on the remaining courts is getting worse. The
fencing has been removed and we will begin stripping the courts this
spring; they are unsafe. The Park Board and residents, at a meeting, said
they wanted to keep the courts at Hansen Park. Four courts were
planned at another location in the park. Soil borings have been taken of
the proposed new site for the tennis courts and the soil is poor. There
was 560,000 budgeted for 3 or 4 courts. Plans were to use the fill under
the existing courts and move it to the new location but now that can't be
done because the fill is not the proper fill. The cost is 560,000 for the
courts and 540,000 for the fill; this is for two courts. Anderson said he
is still recommending the courts be done. This is one of the few times
we have been over budget. Money could be used from the Innsbruck
Park money if we choose. Don't think anything will happen there this
year anyway. The Council will make the final decision where the money
comes from but a recommendation from the Park Board is needed.
Trevorrow asked if the whole park is peat.
Anderson said nearly.
Olson asked if it is possible to have a 3rd court.
Anderson said yes, but it is an extra 530,000.
Carlson asked if two courts would be enough for the demand.
Anderson said he did not feel it would be a problem.
Carlson asked if four courts could be located at another park.
Anderson said yes, Driftwood in the southwest corner of the park but it is
a bad location for them. Anderson feels strongly that the courts should be
at Hansen.
Benke asked if the soil is more stable in the area where the courts would
be moved.
Anderson said yes. As you go up the hill, less fill is needed.
Kalina asked what if this happens again.
Anderson said it won't be the problem it was because last time nothing
was done right.
