January 2, 1991 Park Board Minutes 4
C. Schedule Planning Meetings, Hansen & Pike Lake
Anderson stated he would like to get together with the residents
and show them plans of the Pike Lake property that has been done
by students.
Anderson said there is money in the CIP for total renovation of
tennis courts at Hansen which includes relocation. There is also
money for lighting of trails. Would also like to regrade the
sliding hill. The hill could also be lit. Handicapped
accessibility also needs to be talked about. Would like to do
the work at Pike Lake first and do Hansen in September or
October. Anderson stated he would like to get dates from the
Park Board for these meetings.
Van Hatten suggested making them as soon as possible.
It was agreed that the Pike Lake meeting would be in February and
the Hansen meeting in March.
The Hansen meeting may be held at Bel Air or Highview or City
Hall.
D. Recommendation from New Brighton Human Rights Commission
Anderson stated that the Human Rights Commission had a request
that the play equipment at Hansen be handicap accessible. This
request had been sent to the City Council and the Council has
referred it to the Park Board. The Council would like to see
Hansen Park have some changes to make the play equipment more
accessible to the handicapped and then monitor the park and make
changes at other parks according to the results of the
monitoring.
Van Hatten asked what needed to be done.
Anderson said one or two cushioned but firm sidewalks for
wheelchairs could be installed. Additional climbing devices on
equipment could be installed. The idea is to get the child to
the equipment.
Johnson suggested having Hansen Park monitored for about one year
and then come up with a policy for the other parks.
Anderson said the handicapped accessible equipment would be added
in the spring of 1992.
Carlson asked if the handicapped people could use the equipment
even if they could get to it.
