There were various behaviors that children engaged in while
on the jungle-gym. There were also other actions .observed beyond
the intended behaviors. Some of the most common behaviors
observed were tag, climbing/hanging, and socializing. During the
game of tag, children ran across the suspension bridge, walked on top
of the overhead ladder, and made use of all the equipment
incorporated in the jungle-gym. Not only did the children climb and
hang on the overhead ladder, and graded chain ladder, but also on
the slide and swings. Young adults were observed socializing on the
jungle-gym.
There are environmental and performer constraints that inhibit
the behaviors of children. One of the environmental constraints is
other children playing on the same piece of equipment. Smaller
children were prevented from using certain pieces of equipment
because larger children were in the way. Another environmental
constraint is the dimensions of the .equipment. The circumference of
the hand bars and the width of the beams restricted certain types of
behaviors. Some of the hand bars were too large to grip securely.
The large space between the bars on the overhead ladder prevented
some children from traveling across. Toddlers had difficulty
stepping up on platforms resulting in their behavior of creeping.
This is a result of the height between platforms being too large. The
large vertical distance between the two chains on the suspended
walking chain prevented shorter children from using .this piece of
equipment. Another environmental constraint is the texture of the
surfaces. The hand bars tended to have a smooth surface. This made
6
