Schmidt further stated that ;1" needs for state funds
are taking a back seat. In principle,'elt the proposed Agree-
ment should be approved subject to the ~ttorney inspecting the
appropriate legal language.

Williams agreed with Schmidt that we sh0uld join the group, but
also felt we should realize that, while we may want to promote
economic development and transportation, sometimes there are
negative trade-offs; also, one of the reasons the southern
suburbs developed as they did is because they have had an airport
and, if this group is going to support economic development with
any kind of a major consequence in the northern suburbs, there is
a proposal that floats around every couple of years about a
northern airport.

Motion by Gunderman, seconded by Brandt, to APPROVE THE PROPOSED
JOINT POWERS AGREEMENT TO FORM A COALITION OF METROPOLITAN
COMMUNITIES SUBJECT TO THE CITY ATTORNEY'S AND THE CITY
MANAGER'S REVIEW.

I 5 Ayes - 0 tlayes, Motion Carried

:'i

Page Eight

Mayors' Group
Joint Powers
Agreement
Report 86-9
