City of New Brighton
May 24, 1983

Page Nine

I

The City Engineer reviewed the recent public
hearing regarding the alternatives for
emergency water supply this summer.

Update Super Fund
Grant Emergency
Water Supply

Mayor Harcus questioned whether the City of
Minneapolis could, in fact, shut off access to
their water supply if they were having peak
problems.

The City Engineer stated that if the City of
Minneapolis has sprinkling bans, he would expect
we would also have to abide by that ban.

Councilmernber Blomquist stated he had talked with
Mr. steve Lee, from the Minnesota Pollution Control
Agency who had indicated after the recent public
hearing that the Minneapolis water also contains
small levels of trichloroethylene and asked that
that information be passed on to the City Council.

Councilmember Benke questioned whether the carbon
filtration system would in fact filter out all of
the contaminants.

I

Mr. Anderson, representing CH2M, stated that carbon
is now being used at the arsenal and very low levels
of contamination are being reported and they are, in
fact being accepted by the State Board of Health.
Mr. Anderson stated that he did not know what level
would be acceptable for the New Brighton area.

Councilmember Blomquist stated that they can say,
however, that carbon filtration would not completely
remove the contaminant.

Councilmember Benke noted that either approach would
mean small traces and felt that given the facts he felt
the carbon filtration system would be better.

Mayor Harcus stated that he agreed with the use of the
carbon filtration system.

Councilmember Schmidt stated that he could agree with
the carbon filtration system especially if it could be
guaranteed that carbon could in fact be obtained if
additional carbon was necessary.

I

Mr. Anderson stated that his company did not have all
the additional information they needed to in fact
guarantee the availability of carbon, but that the
company would have that information soon and felt that
they would, in fact, be able to guarantee the availability.

Councilmember Blomquist stated that he would encourage
the use of the carbon filtration system.
