I

I

I

City of New Brighton
September 13, 1983
Page Five

considered for the "corridor area" of the City.

Counci1member Blomquist stated he felt the proposal
merited further consideration, and that he liked the
mix of commercial and residential properties.

Motion by Blomquist, seconded by Harcus to direct
staff to communicate to the developer that the Council
thinks the proposal merits further investigation and any
help that is needed from the staff be given, and to
further direct staff to bring back any agreements
that need Council approval.

Mr.Jack Chock, 857 Third Avenue, stated that the area
being considered was supposed to be a residential area,
and that it was supposed to be left that way. He further
stated that the neighbors don't want this project.

Mayor Harcus responded that none of the Council wants
to ram anything down the neighborhood's throat.

Councilmember Schmidt stated he urges anyone who is
afraiJd of townhomes to look at some that are around
the area. He further stated that the Council is
just saying that they are open minded enough to con-
sider looking at this proposal further, and that he
was not willing to say the Council doesn't want to
take a look at this.

5 Ayes - 0 Nayes - motion carried

Mr. M. V. Rich, of M. V. Rich & Company was present
to discuss the proposal for a commercial development
south of 10th Street, west of 5th Avenue (Beisswenger
Hardware) .

Mayor Harcus stated that the project was worthy of
working with staff to see if the City and developer
could make the numbers work.

Motion by Harcus, seconded by Blomquist to authorize
staff to work with the developer to determine the
feasibility of the project and to bring any agreements
to the Council for consideration.

Councilmember Benke questioned whether these buildings
would be designed for upward story growth, or would
the soil conditions prohibit it.

Mr. Rich stated that they were still looking at that
possibility, but they had insufficient data at this
point to make a final determination.
