<br />I <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />COUNCIL PROCEEDINGS <br /> <br />CITY OF NEW BRIGHTON <br /> <br />Pursuant to notice thereof, a regular meeting of the New Brighton City Council was held Tuesday, June 23, 1998, at <br />7:30 p.m. in the municipal building, 803 Fifth Avenue NW. <br /> <br />Present: <br /> <br />Mayor Benke, Councilmembers Gunderman, Hoffman, Larson, and Samuelson. <br /> <br />Absent: <br /> <br />None <br /> <br />Also Present: <br /> <br />Margaret Egan, Finance Director <br />Matthew Fulton, City Manager <br />Kevin Locke, Community Development Director <br />Charlie LeFevere, City Attorney <br />Les Proper, City Engineer <br />Cary Teague, City Planner <br /> <br />Council Agenda <br /> <br />Council Agenda <br /> <br />Motion by Larson, seconded by Samuelson, to APPROVE THE COUNCIL AGENDA. <br /> <br />5 Ayes - 0 Nayes, Motion Carried. <br /> <br />Council Minutes <br /> <br />Council Minutes <br /> <br />Motion by Larson, seconded by Samuelson, to WAIVE THE READING AND <br />APPROVE THE JUNE 9, 1998, COUNCIL MEETING MINUTES. <br /> <br />5 Ayes - 0 Nayes, Motion Carried. <br /> <br />Commission Minutes <br /> <br />Commission Minutes <br /> <br />Mayor Benke, with Council consent, received the minutes of the Communications <br />Advisory Commission - May 14, 1998; Economic Development Commission - May 12, <br />1998; Planning Commission - April 21 and May 9, 1998; and Public Safety Commission <br />- April 29, 1998. <br /> <br />Special Order of Business <br /> <br />Special Order of <br />Business <br /> <br />David Piggott, Metro East Development Partnership (MEDP), explained their mission is <br />to stimulate growth and diversification of the economic base in Dakota, Washington, and MEDP Presentation <br />Ramsey counties by working with over 100 public and private entities. Their goals are: <br />expand the economic base of the three county region; utilize the region's financial and <br />business resources to assist business growth; create awareness the region is a profitable <br />place to conduct business; and maintain a high level of satisfaction with stakeholders and <br />clients. In 1997, MEDP met or exceeded nearly all goals. Successful projects resulted in <br />over $108 million in new capital investments impacting over 2,500 jobs, and there were <br />89 new prospects and 300 requests for business assistance. Over 30 investors were <br />directly involved and the region was featured in two business publications. The MEDP <br />added 11 new members and finished the year under budget with prudent fiscal <br />management. <br /> <br />Benke asked if the office market in this area is still growing and attracting clients. <br />Piggott noted that the residential, manufacturing, and industrial markets in the three <br />county region are strong and have seen increased market values and job opportunities. <br />
