E. Fisher, Robert UIicklund, Director
of Parks and Recreation..
The minutes of the regular meeting of July 7,.1371 were approved as submitted..
RANISEY COUNTY PARK PLAN
The Park Board discussed its attempt to organize a meeting with representatives
of the Ramsey County Board to consider the impact of the County Park Plan on
New Brighton. After .several fruitless conversations with people from the County
it would appear that the County is not prepared to talk specifics with any
community. They are working up .legal descriptions of each parcel involved in
the plan and are planning to meet with each community when these are completed.
Hagemeyer expressed doubt that such meetings would ever be held and suggested
that the Park Board get together with adjacent communities to present a unified
front. it was also suggested that New Brighton had to take some action or it
would get nothing from the County and end up paying for someone else's parks.
Smith stated he was agreeable to compromising with other communities in order:.
to promote unity.
Gunderman suggested that if the Board was not happy with the. County proposal
then it should be determined what is desirable and .priorities set up. Tlie
possibility of selling the Long Lake property to the County to be developed
according to the established plan was brought up. It was suggested that .this
would expedite development as the County had funds where ,New Brighton didn't
and .that it would receive County-wide use regarless of who develops it..,
Hagemeyer stated that if the County had a park surrounding the Long Lake property
it would negate the value of that property as a New Brighton park. Gunderman
stated he was opposed to County involvement in the Long Lake property and New
Brighton had already committed itself to the development of a park system beyond
the County system.
Smith questioned whether New Brighton could afford to develop Long Lake. If
not then sale to the County should be considered-. Gunderman replied that other
alternatives existed such as development by phase. Hagemeyer stated that
the greatest need would be within the next five years. Gunderman disagreed
stating that the ue ed might change. focus but would still exist..
Smith moved that a letter requesting a meeting to discuss the Ramsey County
Park Open Space Plan and its impact be sent to the Park Boards of Arden Hills,
Shoreview, Moundsview and Roseville. The meeting to be held September 15
at 8:00 at the New Brighton Village Hall,
Hagemeyer seconded. Motion Carried.
