October 4, 1989 Park Board Minutes
2
Gunderman said the Council wants to make sure boards and
commissions have a mission in the community center project.
It would be good to try to generate an opportunity to have
the chairs meet and share with each other. There is a need
to have chairs. discuss major issues.
Kalina asked the status of the Co. Rd. E and Silver Lake
Road strip mall project.
Anderson said it went to the Planning Commission. They
didn't like it. Pratt Homes is .coming in with another plan.
The meeting to see the plan is tomorrow. If the plans looks
reasonable it will go back to the Planning Commission and
then to the Park Board.
Gunderman said that will be a very difficult project and a
very controversial one. The traffic, proposals for strip
mall, and the ponding are big issues for this development.
B. Long Lake Advisory Committee
Did not meet.
C. Community Center Task Force
Johnson said multiple sites have .been looked at - Long Lake
Regional site was one of them.
Anderson said the Council talked after last Tues nights
Council meeting. Four sites were discussed - one was Jones
Lake but that was considered too far from the center of
town. The second site is the Harstad property behind Minar
Ford. The Council was not excited about that site because
of the car traffic. The third site is Harstad's property
in downtown on the northeast corner of Old Highway 8"and
10th Street. There are 12 acres. The city owns property
across the street that could be used for parking.
The Powerhouse is close to closing. The Council has
directed the City Manager to look at the liquor operation
and see if it's worth it to keep it open. The liability
insurance is very expensive and business has been lost by
the American Legion and Main Event. This property may also
be available. It is an advantage to purchase the Harstad
property because there are no homes on the property.
Dick Burry's property is the Council's and staff's first
choice but he's very hard to deal with. He wants $6 million
for the property. The Council would like to choose a site
by late November. Tie wheels are in motion but nothing is
finalized.
