October 4, 1989 Park Board Minutes
3
Anderson said there is a meeting with the National Guard
tomorrow. The National Guard will lose their funding if
they don't have a site by early December. The architects
are BWBR out of Minneapolis. They have hired a consultant,
Ron Rinker, who is very competent and enthusiastic. He is
well known in his field. When we were in Colorado visiting
community centers three were well liked and they were
designed by Ron Rinker.
Johnson said it is like getting a renowned architect here in
New Brighton. Our current situation with the community
center is almost a catch 22. You .have to have something to
have a bond issue. The architects. can only go so far before
the land is picked. It is important that the public be
informed during this whole process so that there are no
surprises. The Park Board needs to make a decision in what
role to take.
Anderson said the Park Board needs to interpret the needs of
the public and help make the best community center with the
information they have. Questions are: what can we afford,
what should the configuation of the building look like. The
architect will want input from the Park Board. The Park
Board will do a lot of guiding in what the residents want.
The Park Board really needs to give thought about what role
they want to play in the process of making a community
center. We do need your input.
Johnson stated that the Park Board has been very involved in
other projects - this is another one that needs our
involvement.
Anderson stated that the Steering Committee, which includes
city staff and community leaders is meeting tomorrow. It
would be nice to bring Park Board ideas to this meeting.
Kalina stated that the Park Board had previously prepared a
list of potential items to be included in a community
center.
Johnson said that was a wish list.
Van Hatten stated that we did not prioritize that list.
Rose asked if Edgewood was closing for sure.
Anderson said from what he knows, yes.
Anderson said the school district may rent Shoreview City
Hall to use for community education programs. It would be
nice to see it in New Brighton, maybe the Powerhouse site
could be used. There are a lot of seniors in New Brighton.
