December 7, 1988 Park Board Minutes
Eichers asked what kind of year the beach had.
Anderson said we didn't quite meet the attendance
expectations but expenses were also under budget. Overall
was satisfied with the. year.
Ocel asked why we charge for the beach use,
Anderson said that decision was made a long time ago. One
reason was to control the numbers and also to offset the
cost. Many of the beaches are starting to charge now,
Ocel asked if there is a charge to launch a boat.
Anderson said no, we can't. The DNR won't allow it. You.
have to have free access to all boating.
Carlson said he also recalls another reason for the. beach
fee and that is that you get a different group of people.
The fee might hinder the beer drinking, trouble making
crowd.
2
Anderson said we do have a family rate and season pass.
If there is a family that can't pay, the Senior Kitchen Band
has set up a scholarship fund for people with financial
difficulty.
V, New Business
A. Community Planning Meetings..
Anderson said at the NRPA meeting he attended in the fall
the presentation was on trends - the aging and different
kinds of activities with considerable discussion on trends.
We are in a period of time where changes are happening.
With our park development we have attempted to involve.
people through park meetings, etc. When we do a project we
talk to people and get them involved. Typically we don't do
that with programming. We get information on an informal
level but have nat specifically asked for it. Would like to
suggest having .three meetings to bring in a staff person and
others that are interested. One of the areas would be the
senior citizens.. Ask them where they think we should be
going, get ideas of where we should be going in 3-5 years.
It would be helpful for those planning. Another group to
get input from would be the athletic service groups such as
basketball, wrestling, track. Would like to get some broad
ideas from them. The third area would be our regular
programs; swimming, tennis, etc. Would also like to look at
the handicapped groups. Would like to have these meetings
carefully constructed so they would be productive.
