December 7, 1988 Park Board Minutes Kalina said there is a practice called "Focus Group" that does this sort of thing - you may want to try it. Anderson said he was thinking of having the meetings in January, March and April. Anderson said he would invite as many as possible and ask for RSVP's and hold the meetings in the Council Chambers. Kalina asked if more community athletic clubs would come about because of the new open enrollment in Minnesota. Anderson said he didn't think it will happen for a long time. 3 Anderson said he has a concern about children being in poor physical condition. Would like to see a combined effort between the schools, athletic clubs and city to work on this problem but there is a lot of politics involved. Kalina said she would be in favor of this to get more kids involved. Anderson said the track. program is a good example of this. The teachers came to the city and asked for help. We pay the teachers .(although less than they normally get) and the kids pay a fee for the program (which used to be free). Found that the enrollment in the program went up. What made the program go was the teachers/coaches wanted to do this and they have daily contact with the kids. Kalina asked if the St. Anthony/New Brighton school district could do this. Anderson said yes but there needs to be good support. Carlson need great support. Sometimes principals need to let the kids out early for a meet because of the different dismissal times. Not all principals are willing to do that. Rose asked why there are the different dismissal times. Carlson said because of transportation. It would be too costly to have each school start at the same time. Anderson asked the Park Board if they would like to try these Community Planning Meetings. The Park Board's response was positive.
