December 7, 1988 Park Board Minutes 5
Van Hatten agreed.
Carlson said we should be careful not to create any erosion
problems
Anderson agreed.
Eichers asked when Freedom Park would be completed.
Anderson said it is complete except for lights and
irrigation. The grading is done and the infield has been
sodded. The field probably won't be used in 1989.
MOTION BY CARLSON, SECONDED BY OCEL, TO DELAY THE INNSBRUCK
PARK PLANNING PROCESS UNTIL HOME OWNERS CAN BE INVOLVED IN
THE PLANNING.
MOTION CARRIED.
C. Hansen Ice Rink Cover
Anderson said for 3 years he has asked the Lake Region
Hockey Association if they were interested in a covered
hockey rink down at Hansen. This year they responded
favorably. We may get ice earlier and it may stay longer
with a cover because the sun cannot get at it. Maintenance
cost may be slightly lower because there will be less snow
to remove.. and less ice melting along the boards. The hockey
association has raised money for an ice arena. They haven't
been interested in a covered rink in the past because they
wanted to get an ice arena. Now they are realizing the ice
arena may not be a reality. They have $70,000 they may like
to donate toward this project. Both rinks will be covered
by one roof and have an overhang to have a few bleachers
under the roof.
Kalina asked if there would be sides.
Anderson said no but could put up wind screens. Stockyard
Days could use it for concessions and other things. May be
able to get about money from the American Legion. Lake
Region feels they can raise another $70,000 this year. If
they can't perhaps the city could front end the money.
Van Hatten said it would be a tremendous addition to the
park.
Anderson said he really can't think of a good reason why we
shouldn't do this. There may be some problem with the soil.
Soil borings will be taken. Lights will be under the cover
and the lights that are up now could be moved to another
park.
