October 5, 1988 Park Board Minutes 2
V. New Business
A. Pike Lake Trai Concept
Johnson asked that the minutes show the Park Board received a
copy of a letter from the DNR regarding the heron nests near
Pike Lake and also received a letter from the Tru tee Board at
United Church of Christ authorizing the-City easement for
walkway paths along the southern .property line.
Anderson said that after the Park Board looks at this it ..will
go onto the Council. The proposed path would go-along the
-noise wall on the_east side of the property. The church
driveway will be moved north about nine feet.
Anderson stated two letters were received. One was from the
church which stated approval of the trail on the .southern
portion of the property. The City will construct and fund the
relocation of the driveway to 9 feet further north than its
current location.
The second letter was from Mary Miller, DNR. She responded to
the heron population. At first she didn't find anything but
recently found 4-5 nests. There is a question of whether
construction will cause the herons to relocate. The area
already receives a lot of traffic. She suggested that we do
not remove any trees in the trail construction. Anderson
commented that there are no trees in the trail site.; a few
bushes may have to be removed.
Anderson commented that the DOT wants to give us land north of
the wall because they don't want to have to maintain the
property. .
Kalina asked where the night heron nests are.
Anderson said they are half way between the path and the lake
scattered 100-150 feet from the lake..
Rose asked who owns the wooded area.
.Anderson said he thinks it is Arnold Palmer. The land is very
low. In order to put homes in there you would have to build a
lift station for the sewage.
Johnson asked who owns the land between the Palmer property
and the lake.
.Anderson said he is not sure - it may be Palmer's property.
As far as he knows only he City and Palmer own property in
that area.
