April 6, 1988 Park Board Minutes
Anderson said it is not but could be. It is worth
trying to do something.
Johnson asked who would enforce it ~f it is posted.
to
Carlson said the Ramsey County water patrol and the New
Brighton Police could be notified to check it
frequently. Lifeguards could place a call in to the
Police if a problem arises.
Resident Pat Commers, 1732 14th .Ave., asked if the Long
Lake Surface Use Ordinance could be explained.
Anderson said he had received a lot of calls regarding
the Long Lake Surface Use Ordinance. In 1979 an
ordinance was drafted for surface use of Long Lake.
There was a committee; 4 were lake shore residents, 2
New Brighton Park Board members and ex-officio Ken
Simons and Maurie Anderson. The ordinance went to the
Park Board, the City Council, and the DNR for approval.
Significant changes were made in the ordinance by the
DNR. The residents have been concerned that the
weekend and holiday hours were too restrictive.
Anderson said if the ordinance needs to be changed a
1et~er must be sent to the City Council. We have a
year before that ordinance goes into effect (?)
Anderson said it would be better to do nothing until
the fall. If we start today, the DNR may want to be
involved in the boat launch.
Anderson said that originally the committee wanted the.
power boating from 11:OOam-7:OOpm. The DNR has times
set in 3 hour increments. They want some consistency
from lake to lake.
Fabian asked why there had to be any hours established.
Anderson said that is what the committee decided.
Johnson said he remembers polling lake residents about
this and they were not concerned.
Carlson said that there is probably something in the
ordinance that someone will not agree with. Jerry
Bensing and George Orning were on that committee.
Carlson said the reason the power boating hours were
put in the ordinance was to make it less desireable to
the wild boater and safe .for everyone else. The
ordinance was really a compromise of a lot of people.
If you do feel it is too restrictive, then you can go
through the process to have it changed.
