February 10, 1988 Park-Board Minutes Page 6
VI. Old Business
A. Civic Center
Anderson said the city has been looking at the civic
center issue for over a year. The Park Board makes a
recommendation and~then it goes on to the Citizens Study
Committee. The Park Board has drawn up what it feels
should be in a community center and has looked at about
6 of them, have an idea of cost and know that they don't
break even. They require 15-20 acres of land. The Park
Board has looked at St. Anthony Jr. High and Middle
School facility. Have talked about renting rooms in
that facility and use classrooms, gymnasium, and
possibly the pool. St. Anthony is very interested in
working with us. The Park Board needs direction from
the Council. Does the Council want to build? If so, it
is a long process. We may still want to consider St.
Anthony. We probably wouldn't program until fall.
Brandt asked if programs would be moved to the St.
Anthony facility.
Anderson said we would expand and possibly move some
programs. Using this facility would mean we would not
be affected by school holidays and special events.
Johnson asked if we could work with St. Anthony on joint
programming.
Anderson said yes, we would do more of that.
Brandt said St. Anthony uses Park View.
Anderson said they may be losing that school in about 2
years.
Rose said Shoreview has their preliminary plan now for a
Community center.
Seward asked if we could do it jointly with them.
Anderson said no, it's too far.
Brandt said this could be discussed at the Council
Workshop that is coming up.
Anderson said we need answers from the Council like:
Are you willing to use 15 to 20 acres of land.
Are you willing to spend $3 - $6 million.
