Probationary Period.. <br /> a.. The probationary period is twelve months from the date of appointment. A probationary <br /> police officer upon recommendation of the Director may be discharged by the City <br /> Manager without cause. There is no right to a hearing under these rules. <br /> b. An employee promoted to a position higher than police officer shall be on probation for <br /> six months. A promotional probationary employee upon recommendation of the Director <br /> may be reduced to their previous grade by the City Manager with or without cause., <br /> c. No probationary appointment shall become permanent without a written recommendation <br /> from the Director to the City Manager, and until the latter has approved permanent <br /> employment. <br /> Section 7. Transfer.. <br /> The transfer of an employee from one position to another within the same classification shall be <br /> considered an assignment and shall be within the sole discretion of the Director, based on his <br /> best judgment as to whatever will promote the efficient operation of the department. <br /> Section 8. Suspension. <br /> a. The Director of Public Safety or the Deputy Director may suspend, with pay or without <br /> pay, pending investigation of actions or conduct, any sworn officer of lower rank for a <br /> period not exceeding 60 days. Sergeants may temporarily suspend with pay, pending <br /> investigation of actions or conduct, any sworn officer of a lower rank until such time as <br /> the Chief of Police ratifies, modifies, or rescinds such suspension.. <br /> b. The Director of Public Safety, or in the Director's absence, the Deputy Director, may <br /> suspend, without pay, for disciplinary reasons, any sworn officer of lower rank for a <br /> period not exceeding 60 days. <br /> c. Sergeants may suspend, without pay, for disciplinary reasons, any sworn officer of lower <br /> rank for a period not exceeding five days. <br /> Section 9. Discharge. <br /> a. Nopolice officer regardless of rank or grade, who has successfullycompleted the <br /> g p <br /> probationary period for their rank or grade, shall be removed or discharged except for <br /> cause and upon written charges, and after an opportunity to be heard in their own defense <br /> as provided by Chapter 419, Minnesota Statutes. <br /> 3 <br />
