WATER SYSTEM IMPROVEMENTS - Staff recommends replacing the existing
watermain on 14th Street NW from a point approximately 225 feet west of 29th Avenue NW to
Silver Lake Road as part of this project. Please see the Watermain Replacement map on Page
10. This section of watermain is an 8 inch cast iron pipe (C.I.P.) which was constructed in 1960
and has experienced several breaks over the years. It is proposed the new watermain be 8 -inch
polyvinylchloride (P.V.C.). The existing watermain is located north of the north curb line in the
boulevard area. The new watermain will be installed in the roadway area which is more desirable
in making it more accessible for maintenance and repairs. Along with the new watermain, new
water services will be installed between the main and property line, and additional valves and
new hydrants will be added to improve fire protection.
All other watermains in the project area are the newer ductile iron pipe (D.I.P.) of which no
watermain breaks have occurred to date.
SANITARY SEWER IMPROVEMNTS - The sanitary sewer mains in the proposed
reconstruction area have been inspected by televising. In reviewing the inspection reports, three
problems were identified as needing repair.
The sanitary sewer line on 14th Street NW at Silver Lake Road has a broken service wye that
needs to be excavated and repaired. Also two sags were detected in sewer lines, one on 13th
Terrace NW east of 27th Avenue NW and one in the easement south of 13th Terrace NW in the
extension of 27th Avenue NW. These sags have the potential of causing sewer backup and are
recommended to be excavated and repaired as part of this reconstruction project. Please see the
Sanitary Sewer Repairs map on Page 11 showing the location of these problem areas.
STORM SEWER IMPROVEMENTS - The City's Surface Water Management Plan
shows no major improvements needed to the storm sewer system in the proposed reconstruction
areas.
At the informational meeting, a concern with street flooding at the intersection of 13th Terrace
NW and 27th Avenue NW was brought to staff's attention. The addition of additional catch
basins at this intersection will be investigated. Please see the Storm Sewer Improvement map on
Page 12 showing the location of these problem areas.
An inspection of the storm sewer system has found no major problems in the project area.
However, if during construction a structure is found to need repair, it will be repaired before the
final street work is done.
29TH AVENUE NW RETAINING WALL REPLACEMENT - The existing
retaining wall in the west boulevard of 29th Avenue NW was constructed in 1986 of recycled
concrete curb sections. The resident at 2908 Brookshire Lane has expressed safety concerns and
displeasure with the appearance of the existing retaining wall and has requested the wall be
replaced. Please see the 29th Avenue NW Retaining Wall Replacement Map on Page 13.
3
