-2—
V. Public Hearing
. A. None
VI. New Business
A. Staff Report — Jenna Hyovalti
Sandy introduced Jenna (the Parks and Recreation Department's newest staff
person). Jenna has been with the department for almost 6 months. Jenna works
with our Eagles Nest birthday parties & group rentals, does the Teen Scene
program and special Eagles Nest events. She is our Recreation Coordinator.
Jeanna presented numbers and other information to the Parks Recreation and
Environmental Commission for January through May of 2008. She gave
information on the categories of daily youth; birthday parties, Eagles Nest groups,
Monday Fun Day, Adventure Day and Teen Scene.
Brad Martens contracts with a company that fixes our Eagles Nest equipment. We
will be dropping that contract. We have a certified playground inspector on staff
now. The playground replacement is on a 10 year cycle. We are scheduled for
replacement in 2013.
Budzynski said we have an advertisement video for the golf course, maybe we
could do one for the Eagles Nest. Martens commented that we just completed
• another one for the FSC Fitness Center. The Eagles Nest will eventually have a
video as well.
B. Trails Committee Update — Jeanne Frischman
Brad Martens gave an update on the Trails Committee meeting held just prior to
the Parks, Recreation and Environmental Commission meeting. The main agenda
item focused on the Safe Route to Schools grant; specifically the part of the grant
which refers to the addition of the Hansen Park trail in the northwest portion of
the park. There were a fair number of residents present. Parks and Recreation
staff presented information on soil conditions and asked for a recommendation
from the Trails Committee. There was quite a bit of discussion regarding trail
opportunities. The consensus was that the Trails Committee did want to see a trail
in the northwest portion of the park. There was concern about the location, trail
cost and the impact on vegetation. The Trails Committee wanted a trail with the
least amount of impact on vegetation, least amount of impact to residents and the
best cost feasible. There will be a public hearing at the August Parks, Recreation
and Environmental Commission meeting on August 6, 2008. Everyone is invited
to come and give us your views.
Also Ramsey County is in the process of doing improvements on Long Lake Road
• from I-694 to 19`h Street. The Trails Committee saw this as a great opportunity to
put a bike lane on the road. It has received Council approval. Ramsey County
said the construction will take place some time in July. Ramsey County has been
very supportive throughout the process.
