Trails Committee Update — Lisa Harreld
Commissioner Harreld commented that the Trails Committee had just finished
meeting moments ago. The first thing talked about was the grant from the DNR
for $100,000 to make a connection between the Northwest Quadrant and Long
Lake Park. There is a plan to have a trail go underneath the railroad bridge that
divides Long Lake Regional Park and the Northwest Quadrant. The City Engineer
is working on the plans for this. Hopefully this will be started in the spring of
2009.
Harreld mentioned there was an article in the Pioneer Press regarding the new
bike lane in New Brighton on Long Lake Road. This is the first bike lane in
suburban Ramsey County.
Safety issues and connections were talked about. One of the safety concerns is the
Rice Creek Trail where it crosses Silver Lake Road. There is some signage but it
is dangerous. Drivers are supposed to stop for pedestrians there. It is a Public
Safety issue and it is a county trail and Silver Lake Road is a county road. We
will keep addressing this issue and continue to work with Ramsey County on this.
We also talked about making bike/trail connections that will connect New
Brighton with the Fridley North Star Trail Station. The stop will be about
Mississippi or University.
On November 15th in the morning, the Irondale cross-country ski team coach will
be recruiting volunteers to help work on the trail for the cross-country ski team.
