• It was recalled that the trail on Old Hwy. 8 was classified a sidewalk.
• That concrete sidewalk is not really big enough on the west side of Old
Hwy. 8. It would not be wise to direct bicycles and rollerblades on that
sidewalk. That is why it would be beneficial to have a multi-use trail
on Old Hwy 8 on the east side.
• Back in February there was a plan for a sidewalk from Hwy. 96, down
Old Hwy. 8 down to 14th Street .
• Another Commissioner remembered that and felt it was a multi-use
trail because it was 8 ft. wide and felt it was asphalt. That trail runs
along Old Hwy. 8 where the hotel is and where there are a couple of
the industrial parks south of the hotel. Then it slips in on 14th and
stops. There was a road that was going to run along the freeway and
connect up with ls`Ave. We had talked about having a bike land on
that street, which would be smart because now there will be a multi-
use trail and it would keep people off Old Hwy. 8. The thought was
that would be for commuter bikers.
• If we are going to do a trail, we are going to have to connect with 14`h
Street because they cannot build the trail all the way up to Hwy. 96.
Connect with 14th Street and then go up and around. But we would not
be able to hook up with Long Lake Regional Park. If they can't build a
trail up to Hwy 96, then we can't connect with Long Lake Regional
Park.
• We need to find out if it is true that we do not have enough easement
on Old Hwy. 8 to have a multi-use trail that goes all the way up to
Hwy. 96.
• According to MNDOT the two bridges will be updated in 2018 —6
years out.
• Here is the list of our priorities for connectivity to other communities:
1. A multi-use trail that connects from Hwy. 96 going south
through New Brighton Exchange, over the 1-694 bridge to the
New Brighton Community Center.
2. Multi-use trail connectivity to Arden Hills on either County
Road E2 or 10th St./County Road F/Lake Valentine Road.
• Commissioner Trevorrow would like to see the trail from Fridley
go through New Brighton and into Long Lake Regional Park.
There is a signed bike route that comes from Fridley and stops on
the border between Fridley and New Brighton. There is a
designated bike route on Mississippi, Rice Creek and Gardenia. He
talks about the Gardenia (which turns into 16th) to 28th by Hidden
Oaks to 14th and 14th to Long Lake Road and Long Lake Road to
Long Lake Park.
• It would make sense to stripe the street on Mississippi if we have
the width to do it. Mississippi already has a bike trail on it. You
can go north or south on it.
• We have been trying to stay away from Mississippi and trying to
stay on City streets because Mississippi is a County Road.
5
