New Brighton Parks, Recreation and Environmental Commission 2
Minutes of January 7, 1998
location. This area that was hoped to be the tennis court location, became
an impossibility. Tennis courts are laid out north and south (because of
sun). All three scenarios resulted in a maximum of 75 ft. reduction in the
ballfield infield which makes the ballfield unusable. If we put the tennis
court at top of the hill, we lose the ballfield. You may not have to have an
aglime infield, could make it a grass infield. If we did that, it would also
make the area available for soccer. Soccer is played in lower area now and
could be moved to upper part. We could move tennis court to another park,
if we do that, do we want to make a soccer field? On Oakwood an area was
graded for the tennis court but that was before we knew impact on the
upper portion of the park.
Resident comments and concerns were:
s Fix up the ballfield and put the two tennis courts on lower portion
of the park.
• Before the school was sold, the tennis courts were used extensively.
Have been waiting 18 years for these courts.
• Residents at the last meeting stated they did not want the tennis
courts on the lower portion of the park.
Twenty years ago he may have been able to use the tennis courts,
now he would like to see his grandchildren play on them. Don't
want to go across Silver Lake Road, prefer to see them on
Oakwood
• There is a parking problem, people parking in fire lane. Would like
to see the tennis courts in the park. Almost all the neighbors have
grand kids. Suggest ballfield and soccer be on top and the tennis
courts below. Don't want tennis on top because it would be too
much of a parking problem.
If ballfield is lost, would it be replaced by another field in the City?
• Shoreview Little Lakes is using the ballfield, organized soccer is
played on the bottom of the park.
• Liked the idea of making the infield grass
Didn't like the idea of making infield grass, make field second class
• Park is getting good utilization. Thought all Engineering issues
regarding sewer main, etc were resolved when last meeting was
held, don't understand why this is coming up again.
• Has not heard of any residents that want to lose the ballfield, could
it be reoriented.
• Want at least one tennis court at Silver Oak
• Lower area better location for courts, because more visible and less
likely to have vandalism problems.
• Would like to squeeze two courts in on the lower level
• Concern of soccer ball coming into their yards if the upper area is
• used for soccer
• Would like to see the baseball outfield lined for soccer
• Could bituminous pathway be moved or removed
