MEMO
September 27, 1996
To: New Brighton Parks, Recreation and Environmental Commission
From: Maurice Anderson, Director of Parks and Recreation
Re: Soccer Association Field Needs
The soccer association in New Brighton has been working with the City to find
temporary and/or permanent soccer facilities in the City. The following is a list of areas
• that have been considered and very brief explanation of why they have been rejected.
Hansen Park - Soil too unstable for long term use.
Hidden Oaks - Very expensive, eliminates youth baseball and hockey and very likely
to generate significant neighborhood opposition.
Vermont Park - Too small.
Driving Range - Development cost of at least $5,000, more if irrigated, $15,000
annual cost to City and loss of facility serving over 20,000 golfers annually.
Arsenal - Unavailable and no timetable for access.
Minneapolis Water Works Reservoir Site - Required ventilation system, eliminates
use of surface as soccer field.
Staff is suggesting that Driftwood Park be converted from an adult softball facility to a
soccer facility.
•
