Advantages:
► Adult softball games can be moved to Freedom Park and played under the
lights.
► Softball fencing etc. can be removed by city forces this fall at no out of
pocket costs.
► The field can be made useable for soccer at an out of pocket cost of about
$2,500.00.
• Driftwood Park has adequate parking, permanent rest rooms, emergency
phones, and well drained established turf.
► Driftwood Park has been heavily used for active sports since the park was
established so neighborhood resistance should be minimal if any.
► If soccer needs decline or a replacement facility is found and developed,
Driftwood can easily be converted back to a softball field.
Disadvantages:
► The field is somewhat under sized 75 x 100 yds while the optimum size is
80 x 110 yds.
Expansion of the field to the desired size would involve relocating a
section of pathway system and a significant amount of fill and turf work,
• estimated cost $10,000.
► Permanent soccer use would require installation of an irrigation system
estimated cost $12,000.
Recommendation
To request Council approval of a two year commitment of Driftwood as a soccer
facility, with a 1996 expenditure not to exceed $3,000 and that the Commission agrees
in the summer of 1997 to review the needs for soccer and make a recommendation
regarding Driftwood as a permanent soccer field with the associated costs.
G:1WP\PB961SOCCER.MEM
•
