City of Report Number 12-215
Nl Agenda Section VI-4
liw 13RIGHTON Council Meeting Date September 11, 2012
the city that works for you
REQUEST FOR COUNCIL CONSIDERATION
ITEM DESCRIPTION: Approval to Accept GameTime Grant and Approve the Purchase of Playground
Equipment, Play Features & Ground Materials.
DEPARTMENT HEAD'S APPROVAL: Sandy Breuer; Director oill.Nks and cation
CITY MANAGER'S APPROVAL:
No comments to supplement this report Comments attached
Recommendation:
To approve the GameTime grant and purchase playground equipment, play features and ground materials for
Hansen Park.
Legislative History:
In 2006, Council adopted the New Brighton Parks, Recreation, and Trails Strategic Plan. As part of our vision and
mission, this plan states that we are committed to improving health. It further states that the City would emphasize
our parks by keeping them current, safe and serving the community.
In late 2011 a committee of residents was formed to help select the playground structure and play features. This
committee met for nine months and reviewed six proposals from four different playground manufacturing
companies. The proposals(quotes shown below) were then narrowed to two playground manufacturing companies;
those two being GameTime and Landscape Structures.
Company Costs Frei ht& Taxes # of Play Events Total Cost
St. Croix Recreation $71,500.00 Included 39 $71,500.00
Webber Recreation $64,087.75 $7,989.62 46 $72,077.37
Landscape $72,500 $5,625.63 40 $78,125.63
Structures
GameTime $78,874.83 $10,228.31 40 $89,103.62
During this review timeframe, staff became aware of matching funds for a GameTime Back to School Playground
Grant that was being offered. The grant funds were available for predesigned PowerScape structures only. As a
result the committee had to choose from a pre-designed catalog structure in order to qualify for the grant. Below is
the structure the committee then chose to replace their first custom choice structure, based on the grant criteria.
GameTime $66,114.63 $10,705.31 51 $76,819.94
GameTime offered this grant program on a first-come, first-serve basis with a final application deadline of October
31, 2012. Staff applied for the grant immediately as a way to add additional value to the park. The City of New
Brighton was awarded a grant in the amount of$32,380. The amount awarded is 50% of the cost of the preferred
playground structure that was chosen.
