Public Safety Commission <br /> January 28,2013 <br /> Attending: Commissioner Allen, Commissioner Benke, Commissioner Bredenbeck, <br /> Commissioner Donohue, Commissioner Hollimon, Commissioner Kocon, <br /> Commissioner Kroll, Commissioner Lamp, Commissioner Schumann, <br /> Commissioner Woods, Officer Tom Griffin, Director Jacobson, Mr. Grant <br /> Wyffels (Director of Public Works), Mayor Jacobsen, and Mr. Dave <br /> Matteson(Allina Health) <br /> Absent: Council Member Samuelson <br /> Call to Order/Roll Call <br /> Commissioner Allen called the January meeting to order at 6:30 pm and roll call was taken. <br /> November Meeting Minutes <br /> The November meeting minutes were reviewed. Commissioner Bredenbeck made a motion to <br /> approve the November meeting minutes; Commissioner Woods seconded. Motion carried. <br /> Public Hearing/Presentations <br /> A. Process for Approval of Traffic Signage—Grant Wyffels, Director of Public Works <br /> Director Jacobson reported traffic signage requests that come to the Public Safety Commission <br /> for review, come from Council, city staff, or petition. <br /> Mr. Grant Wyffels, Director of Public Works, reported most signs need to be authorized by <br /> Council. He stated most requests received from the public are looked at first by city staff. <br /> Requests for no parking signs or stop signs are usually directed to the Public Safety Commission <br /> for review and recommendations to Council. <br /> Mr. Wyffels reported off ramps are handled by MnDOT so the project completed on the ramp off <br /> 694 to 10th St NW was handled by MnDOT. Commissioner Lamp asked how the Public Safety <br /> Commission can have input on these types of future traffic projects. Mr. Wyffels stated he will <br /> work with Director Jacobson to forward information on upcoming projects to the Public Safety <br /> Commission. <br /> B. Duties of a School Resource Officer—Officer Tom Griffin <br /> Officer Tom Griffin is a New Brighton Police Officer who is assigned to Irondale High School <br /> as the School Resource Officer(SRO). Officer Griffin reported there are approximately 1,600 <br /> students and 100 staff members at Irondale High School; his work day is typically from 7:00 am <br /> —3:00 pm. Officer Griffin drives a marked patrol vehicle. <br /> Officer Griffin stated his role as the SRO involves: Consult, counsel,mentor, and to respond to <br /> incidents. Officer Griffin is part of the Building Safety Committee and is involved in <br /> coordinating the required fire drills and lockdowns. Officer Griffin meets with the school Deans <br />
