Officer Griffin hopes the team effort of school staff and <br /> himself will reflect this in the future. <br /> The typical incidents that Officer Griffin handles at Irondale High School include reports of <br /> bullying, harassment, disorderly conduct, theft, drugs, etc. This does not happen a lot but he <br /> does deal with these things. <br /> Officer Griffin stated he considers it a privilege to serve as the SRO at Irondale High School. <br /> Commissioner Kocon inquired about the lockdown drills. Officer Griffin reported they are <br /> required to hold 5 lockdown drills per state statute. Officer Griffin also works with other school <br /> staff, ie. lunch staff, so they know how they can help out in these types of situations. <br /> C. Mounds View Schools—Public Safety Response—Director Jacobson <br /> Director Jacobson gave a presentation on New Brighton School Safety. He noted the history of <br /> school based officers began with the DARE officers in 1986-87. The School Resource Officers <br /> (SRO) are police officers who serve in the schools full time during the school year. The <br /> importance/tactics of the SRO changed after the incident at Columbine High School on April 20, <br /> 1999. <br /> Director Jacobson reviewed the duties/focus of the SRO and reviewed the history of SRO's at <br /> Irondale High School, Highview Middle School, and the Area Learning Center. As a result of <br /> the Newtown, CT, school shooting on December 14, 2012, the school district asked and we made <br /> a commitment to begin a full time SRO at Sunnyside, Bel Air and Pike Lake Education Center <br /> beginning on January 16, 2013. Right now, this is a temporary position. <br /> Director Jacobson stated our department will continue to work with school leadership on best <br /> practices and to focus on prevention and early intervention. Our department will continue to <br /> assist with school safety plans and will continue to train for response to school incidents. <br /> Updates <br /> A. Human Rights <br /> As the December monthly report indicated, the Human Rights Subcommittee met with family <br /> members who believe they have been victims of a criminal damage to property crime due to their <br /> religion and sexual preference. Commissioner Kroll, Commissioner Lamp and Commissioner <br /> Schumann were at this meeting; Commissioner Kocon was not able to attend and Director <br /> Jacobson was the staff representative. Commissioner Kroll reported a mediation session was <br />
