• The drawing for North Park included two ball fields. Parking may be an
issue.
• Driftwood is probably the only other field where you could get a softball
field of that size.
• Driftwood is a good field. There is more parking now. However, that field
is rented quite often and we would lose the rental revenue if it were turned
into a softball field.
• New Brighton probably cannot charge more for a field at New Brighton
Exchange because we compete with other communities such as Roseville
and Fridley and we all try to stay in the same fee range.
• Lighting on the New Brighton Exchange field was discussed; it could be
installed before the housing development and home buyers would be
aware before purchasing. Adding lights later is always difficult. Some
conceptual plans showed two fields. One includes a parking lot.
• If two more fields were put in the New Brighton Exchange, two fields at
Hansen could go away.
• Perhaps a dog park could be put in at Hansen.
• The recreation supervisors felt that New Brighton soccer program needs
were taken care of quite well.
• Recreation Supervisor Pat Tuma said the highest number of calls for
rentals, comes from those looking for a full size soccer field.
• If Vermont field had a full size soccer field, we may want to add some
structure (covering) to that park and use that park for more rentals.
• We would want to have an adult league or know that it will be rented.
Sometimes the fields are used without people paying for them.
• Discussion took place about lacrosse and the high demand for those
fields.
• It may not take much to increase the size of the soccer field at Vermont
Park, since the building has been removed.
• Parks Superintendent, Chris Wolla stated that there are plans to improve
the Vermont field this year by bringing in top soils, crown it to keep water
off and install irrigation.
• Maybe we start thinking about moving some things around, start asking
questions like what would it take to put a full-size soccer or lacrosse field
at Vermont. Some of it is the philosophy of this group; are we building
fields to rent or to program on. Right now we are not doing anything with
lacrosse. It would be a huge expense to purchase equipment.
• What does the public want?
• If Vermont is under-utilized, it would make sense to put a soccer or
lacrosse field in to get more use. Maybe rent it out to the community first
and get a feel for what the requests of the community are, then think about
developing a lacrosse program. In the meantime, it could generate some
revenue for the City.
• There are 3-4 houses on the south end of the Vermont Park.
• Another difficulty with Vermont Park is that there is no parking.
• It would be nice to have an overlay of a softball, soccer, and lacrosse field
and perhaps our current fields, could be moved if we felt they would be
better utilized in another location. What park is under-utilized with the
space that is there? Could that space be better utilized with a different
3
