SECTION 3 <br /> DEFINITIONS <br /> 3.1 Probationary Employee (Revised November 13, 2012) <br /> A probationary employee is one who has been assigned a regular full-time, three <br /> quarter time, half time position, but has not completed the required six (6) month <br /> probationary period. The probationary period for all police officers, paid on-call fire <br /> fighters, maintenance workers, and mechanics shall be one year from the date of <br /> employment or promotion. <br /> 3.2 Elected Official <br /> An elected official is one who has been elected to a constitutional or statutory office <br /> within the City governmental system. <br /> 3.3 Department Director <br /> A Department Director is the administrative head of a department who has the authority <br /> to recommend hiring and termination of employees to the City Manager; The <br /> Department Director may administer discipline and corrective action such as <br /> suspension, training, transfer, and adjust grievances; The Department Director is also <br /> responsible for administering the department's annual budget and supervising the day <br /> to day work activities. <br /> 3.4 Non Union Employees <br /> Non-union employees are all employees in positions that are not specifically included in <br /> any of the City bargaining units. <br /> 3.5 Exempt Positions <br /> Exempt positions may include managers, executive, administrative, and professional <br /> employees, who because of the nature of their work are exempt from the minimum <br /> wage and overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act. <br /> 3.6 Non-Exempt Employees <br /> Non-Exempt employees are those employees who do not meet the criteria for exempt <br /> status and are eligible for overtime pay under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). <br /> 3.7 Interns <br /> Interns are short-term employees, typically less than six (6) months, employed part-time <br /> and receiving no benefits. An internship position is typically related to the completion of <br /> an educational requirement for an undergraduate or graduate college program. Any <br /> department wishing to create an intern position shall notify the City Manager. Benefits <br /> are not paid or accrued by interns working for the City of New Brighton. <br /> 3.8 Unpaid Interns (Revised November 13, 2012) <br /> Unpaid interns are short-term employees that typically work for the City for less than six <br /> (6) months in a calendar year.
