fertilizer. <br />• Golf season started. There has been an increase in all golf leagues. <br />• We held our first volunteer recognition event on April 7. There were <br />about 100 people in attendance. Waffles were served. We had <br />donations from Culvers and Pletscher's Greenhouse. <br />• National Volunteer Week was celebrated April 6 -12. Volunteers <br />donated over 5,300 hours of time and talent. <br />• 112 trees will be planted in a gravel bed that is located at the south <br />water tower. They will be re- planted in the fall on boulevards and <br />other city properties. <br />• The Council has a work session on June 10th to review the contract <br />we had with Village Green for snow plowing. <br />• Had our second music performance series in collaboration with the <br />Ramsey County Library which brought in nearly 40 people. <br />Tomorrow is the third one. <br />Director Announcements: <br />• We have a 180 day park maintenance employee who will start this <br />coming Monday. Will be helping with mowing. <br />• We are starting our 4th year with Dairy Queen on Old Hwy. 8. On <br />specific days, D.Q. donates 10% of its sales in May, June, July, <br />Aug, and Sept. and has helped nearly 100 kids in our programs <br />with a scholarship. <br />• Matthew Justin had a Scout project last year. He will be installing a <br />totem pole at the park the end of May or early June. We will notify <br />you of when that will take place. <br />• Innsbruck Park is receiving a "retrofit" on the playground equipment <br />which is saving us thousands of dollars. Last year we did the <br />playground at Hidden Oaks. Replacing the pieces that no longer <br />meet safety standards and repainting. This year Innsbruck and <br />Meadow Wood with be retrofitted. <br />• Our Assistant Parks and Recreation Director left for another <br />opportunity. Jason Hicks is now the current Assistant Parks and <br />Recreation Director. Bill Bach is the new Facilities Manager who is <br />taking Jason Hicks' old position and will be starting on Monday, <br />May 19. <br />• The City of New Brighton received an award from AARP. We were <br />one of the top 100 host sites for the Smart Drivers Safety Course <br />(previously known as Defensive Driving). Out of the top 100 we <br />rank 15. There are over 18,000 sites throughout the Nation. Over <br />600 participated in courses at the New Brighton Community Center. <br />Council Liaison Strub mentioned that the Council was presented with a <br />petition from the Sunny Square neighborhood to keep the hockey rink <br />boards up at that location. What are the next steps? <br />Director Breuer commented that at the next Council meeting staff is <br />requesting Council to send the item to PREC. In June PREC will see <br />this item on the agenda. <br />
